Did you really think I was going to let go? I've been spying on you! I've been leaving comments here and there and now I'm back to tell you some interesting facts about our songs.
Big Lies - The drum beat of this song was inspired by The Beatles.
Delicate souls - In the original version there was an instrumental intro, much different from the one you can hear now. Also the section that splits the song in two was referred to as "the telephone part" because I used a particular effect on my voice that made it sound like I was on the phone.
Glitch a bit - The title comes from a dream I once had: While waiting to take a flight I went into a record shop and found an unrealeased David Bowie album which was called Glitch a Bit. The next morning I wrote the song and we decided to make it our band's name just recently.
In the shades - The first version of this song had no chorus, there was a long instrumental coda which ended with a subtle variation on Happiness is a warm gun by The Beatles.
The Pride of wearing a suit - This is a desperate demand for truth written at a time when I was working for some big companies. Is there really any pride in wearing a suit?
Torpedo - It has a vicious double meaning!
P.S. Matt Morris, thanks for your comment, you seem to know what you are talking about, I'm working on a post about that.
On one of my first posts I asked everyone why were they here on Vox. Well, we made this page just to submit our music to the A&R guys and, hopefully, to involve their labels in our project. We met a few interesting people along the way and received lots of comments on our music, which was great! One of our main goals, knowing if our work could be appreciated by a wider (and unknown) audience, was reached and it was a success.
This is my last post because there are many important things that I don't really want to share and there are so many more stupid things that "I could" share. I don't want to write a post about my cat sneezing, just as I don't want to start posting pointless comments on other people stuff just to get their attention. I am a musician and my job is to make music, I'm more concerned about writing lyrics than posts :)
I believe this could really be a valid alternative to the old way of getting heard by sending in cds, it's just that I don't feel like there's much more I can do to get ourselves heard without acting like a pathetic attention seeker. If you listened to our songs then you probably can understand why we can't act like that.
THIS IS THE GLITCH.
If you want to work for/on our band, please get in touch!
A taste of our music is here on this page, we will still post relevant news and new music when we got any.
And just to get things in motion...
1. We are looking to do some gigs in Europe this summer/fall so we are currently taking into consideration any kind of venue. Please, let us know if your local venues will accept a band from Italy. We don't travel first class or need four hotel suites filled with roses and champagne, a Ryanair flight, cold pizza and couches for four will do.
2. We are looking for a live promoter for the UK alone, we are looking for a more intensive serie of gigs there during summer/fall. Same as above applies.
3. We are looking for a record deal. Are you an A&R at one of the labels on this site or other major labels? Are you an indie label and wish to sign us? Please, get in touch! We need to be SAVED from our own lives :)
Hey Voxers, how are you doing?
You've been growing in numbers and we are receiving more comments than we could have hoped for, so this is our usual THANK YOU!!!
On rehearsals day, formerly known as tuesday, we had a lot of fun rehearsing our complete setlist, working on our three new tracks and I even got to play some drums! (I did pretty good considering no one was in the room at the moment) I am so excited by our new songs that I will share some details with you...
1. Working title "Shoot the teenagers"
As usual, I am talking about something by singing and describing something else. It's a sad short story, sung a là Morrissey, about a shooting that happened or could happen. I love the dramatic twist in both the music and the rhytm near the end, but I'm still working on the lyrics to that part. Boy, this will sting!
2. Working title "Your second lovesong"
This was once a classic lovesong but everything changed when we started working on our new sound. Stealing a steady beat from bands like The Strokes and Queens of the stone age, it has evolved to a great rock song that will have you dancing. Obviously I have to write fresh new lyrics, since now the chorus has the exact lenght for "I want to f**k you in the **s" and that's not so nice.
3. Working title "Do something / The moon song"
I believe this is going to be a great song, an emotional journey through hope, despair and disillusion. I don't want to spoil the story just yet, I'll just tell you that it's based on the thoughts of a homeless lady I met in a bar on my way back home from work. It's also going to sound very different from what we've done so far. At this stage you could probably link this song to Sigur Ros / Nine Inch Nails / Mogway. Go figure!
And there's more coming...!
If you like our music then spread the word! We feed on your feedback... :)
I did down... BUY Mika's album Life in cartoon motion or whatever it is called. I was intrigued by the single (which still remains a nice track) and by reading a couple of optimistic reviews on the magazines. My opinon: It's a total s**t, that's what it is. I heard he wrote "Grace Kelly" because the record companies didn't want him to release his record... Wise choice! How can you release a song with these lyrics (and I'm not joking):
"Everybody's gonna love today, love today, love today.
Everybody's gonna love today.
Anyway you want to, anyway you've got to,
Love love me, love love me, LOVE LOVE."
And this is just the chorus, for the record. What I can't stand for the life of me is that "love - love" at the end, how sad. If someone this happy comes my way I could actually kill him.
So I came up with the idea of recycling his work (cd and case) for a better purpose. I'll just name 5, you are free to add whatever you would like to do with Mika's latest release (and when I say this I keep thinking about Ricky Gervais for some reason).
1. Strap two copies of his cds to your feet and dance some flamenco. You could add more copies and experience with different heights and sounds.
2. Keep the booklet and case but swap the cd with some heavy metal band then send it to an orphanage of your choice.
3. Add some fake autographs and send a few hundreds copies to the Vatican "From Mika - Love Love".
4. Create some conceptual music which includes crushing a mika cd very 10 seconds.
5. Encourage Mika to make a duet with michael Jackson, people will start burning his cds sooner than you'll expect!
6. What would you do? :)
Hey Voxers, long time no post!
I'm sorry but I have been busy rehearsing the news songs, booking some gigs around town and (sigh) working. Strangely enough, I received a pm from a guy on myspace who wants us to play his club. Finally all the time I spent setting up that myspace profile is paying me back! I am so happy that more and more people are getting closer to us, some from the internet, some from the buzz, and we want to give them a great show!
Appendix A - Live Venues in Rome
Down here in Rome we currently have about 4/5 live venues who could host a band without making it sound bad. Moreover, the vast majority of clubs doesn't book original bands anymore, they just rely on tribute bands. We have countless cover bands of U2, Pink Floyd, Queen, David Bowie, Pearl Jam, Rem, you name it we have it! Ok, I have been in a Beatles cover band, then in a Glam Rock one (I had to wear extremely embarassing clothes and accessories), then again in a Radiohead one, but that was just to "taste the stage". The point is, if you want to play your music here, you don't have many chances. This is when I thank all you voxers twice: for being able to understand what I say in my songs and for liking our music. You are making it happen!
Appendix B - Herdwhite recommendation!
I've been listening to a lot of stuff from Vox but nothing as good as the music this guy makes. I honestly don't like all of his tracks but I think he has a high level of production and can provide an outstanding quality both in lyrics and music. I love his voice, he has a deep meaningful tone and a great taste for melodies! I'd say his best track is Despair, give it a spin and feel its vibe, and don't forget to leave a comment if you like it!
Now there's full lyrics to each of our songs. Just click on audio up here ^ choose a song and start listening.
Don't forget to leave a comment on what you hear! Unless it's something bad, in that case I have a special filing cabinet (like David brent said).
Where do lyrics come from? Do you need a particular place/situation to be able to write good lyrics?
Usually my words and music come together as I write things on my guitar. I start by picking some good chords either on the guitar or the piano and then I immediately think about a fitting melody. Then I start to sing gibberish trying to get a feeling of what it could all sound together. I slowly transform the gibberish into words that have the same lenght or "resonate" with what I'm singing.
If you start writing a song, you probably already have something on your mind that needs to get out so you just have to translate this buzz you are hearing. That's why I almost always start by choosing a theme, then a title and what the story/feeling of it will be.
Bad things happen when this doesn't work...! Like right now, but I'll get through it :)
Hey Voxers!
First I'd like to thank everyone who left comments on our vox/books/audio, this is giving us so much strenght! I know I was born to sing and write songs, nonetheless tomorrow I'll have to go to the office again, until something better comes along. This is why your comments are really making us proud of our work, pushing us forward and up.
I'm going to put the finishing touches on the lyrics to one of the new songs. It's about not fitting in, being disappointed by the way things are, by the way others seem to fit in so easily that they too become a part of this big grinding machine. And there's a shooting involved :)
If you were to indicate a song whose lyrics really changed your ways of thinking, what would it be?
Hey Voxers, how are you today?
I have the house to myself so I'm going to concentrate on writing some lyrics, I find it so much easier to do when there's no one around. You can relax, think about what you are trying to send out to your imaginary audience, open your heart and read the insides (how sentimental).
I should finish the lyrics for two of our new songs and start thinking about another one which is just beginning to see the light, birth due on tuesday (rehearsals day!). I'm so relaxed right now, I ate something, made some coffee and minutes from now I'm going to be in my bed writing. Inspiration is coming to visit... Again...!
I'm thinking about starting a group, maybe I'll look into it on the weekend...
